Printed Ceramic Mugs: Sublimation or Direct Printing
A guide to choosing between sublimation and direct printing for ceramic mugs: image options, durability, quantities, indicative prices and turnaround times.

Printed ceramic mugs in Latvia are usually made in two ways: sublimation, where a full-colour image is embedded into a special mug coating (only for white or specially prepared sublimation mugs), and direct printing — pad printing or screen printing for round surfaces — where a 1–3 colour logo is printed straight onto the glaze and heat-set. Sublimation is better value for small quantities and photographs (from 1 piece), while direct printing suits coloured mugs and larger orders from 50–100 pieces. Production time in both cases is usually 5–10 business days after artwork approval.
How sublimation works
With sublimation, the image is first printed onto special paper, then transferred onto the mug's polymer coating using a press at around 180–200 °C. The colour doesn't sit on top of the surface — it soaks into the coating, which is why the print feels smooth to the touch and doesn't crack.
What this means in practice:
- You can print photographs, gradients, full-colour illustrations, and even wrap the design around the entire mug 360°.
- The mug must have a sublimation coating — this almost always means a white or partly white surface.
- Economical from as little as 1 piece, making it ideal for gifts, names on individual mugs, and personalised batches.
- Sublimation doesn't work on coloured glaze: light tones in the image simply won't show up.
How direct printing on ceramics works
By direct printing we mean pad printing and screen printing for round surfaces. The colour is applied in dots or through a mesh directly onto the glaze and then dried/heat-set. The logo is barely noticeable to the touch, and colours are mixed to Pantone.
Key differences:
- Works on mugs of any colour, including black, dark blue or matte finishes.
- Each colour requires a separate printing pass, so typically 1–3 colours are used; photographs aren't printed this way.
- Set-up costs (printing plates/screens) pay off from around 50–100 pieces.
- The print withstands everyday washing, but aggressive detergents and industrial dishwashers will wear it down over time.
A third option — laser engraving
The laser removes the top layer of glaze, revealing a lighter ceramic tone underneath. The result is single-colour, with no ink involved, and is practically wear-resistant. It's a great solution for dark matte mugs and simple logos, but it's not suitable for images with fine tonal gradients.

Indicative prices
Prices are per piece, including the mug and printing, excl. VAT. The exact price depends on quantity, the specific model, number of colours, and number of print locations.
| Quantity | Sublimation, full colour | Direct printing, 1 colour | Laser engraving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–9 pcs | from 11.00 EUR | — | from 13.00 EUR |
| 10–49 pcs | from 8.00 EUR | from 7.50 EUR | from 8.50 EUR |

| 300+ pcs | on request | on request | on request |
A second print location or an extra colour typically adds 0.30–0.80 EUR/pc to the price. For direct printing, a first order includes a one-off plate/screen set-up fee.
Files and preparation
Please send logos and illustrations as vector files (.ai, .eps, .pdf) in CMYK colour mode, with Pantone colours specified separately. For sublimation, we also accept raster files, but they must be at least 300 dpi resolution at the actual print size — a JPG saved from social media on your phone usually isn't good enough.
Before production, we prepare a digital proof showing the print placement and dimensions. Once approved, the standard turnaround is 5–10 business days depending on quantity and technology; rush orders can be arranged by agreement. If you need the mugs for an event with a fixed date, allow at least two weeks of buffer time.
Frequently asked questions
Can printed ceramic mugs be washed in a dishwasher?
Yes, but on a gentle cycle and at a moderate temperature. Both sublimation prints and direct printing will withstand regular washing, but strong alkaline detergents and 70 °C cycles will wear the colour down over time. Laser engraving doesn't change at all.
What's the minimum order quantity for mugs?
For sublimation and engraving, we work with orders of even a single piece. For direct printing, the minimum is around 50 pieces, since a printing plate/screen needs to be made; from 100 pieces, the unit price drops noticeably.
Can a colour photograph be printed on a black mug?
No. A full-colour image requires a white sublimation mug, such as the Pic 330 ml or the Bari 240 ml sublimation model. On a black mug, the realistic options are 1–2 colour printing or laser engraving.
Can a mug be printed on both sides and around the handle?
Two print locations is the standard solution. A full 360° print area is only possible on sublimation mugs, and even then a small technical gap of 5–10 mm remains near the handle.
Can you print on mugs I supply myself?
For sublimation — only if they have a factory-applied sublimation coating, otherwise the colour won't hold. For regular glazed mugs, we offer pad printing or engraving, but we assess the shape and surface beforehand.
Send us your logo and desired quantity at info@attaprint.lv or message us on WhatsApp at +371 25776699 — we'll prepare a quote with an artwork proposal within one business day. You can also browse mugs and other printing options in our catalogue, and we're happy to show samples in person at Kandavas iela 29A, Riga.
