Stickers in Rolls or Sheets: How to Apply Them Faster and Easier

Comparing stickers in rolls and sheets: application speed by hand and with an applicator, quantities, price and technical parameters to specify in your order.

Stickers in rolls or sheets: how to apply them faster and easier

If you need to apply stickers in quantities above a few hundred pieces, the choice between stickers in rolls or sheets affects your work speed more than the printing itself: by hand, from a sheet you can usually apply 150–250 stickers per hour, from a roll by hand 300–500, and with a simple hand applicator or dispenser 600–900 pcs per hour. Sheets are better suited for small quantities (from 1 pc up to around 300–500 stickers) and complex shapes, while rolls are better for serial labelling, where one person applies labels to hundreds of products in one session. We produce both options at Kandavas iela 29A, Riga, with a turnaround of 1–3 business days.

How applying from a roll differs from applying from a sheet

From a sheet, each sticker has to be peeled off individually: your finger searches for the corner, the sticker has to be separated from the backing, and only then placed on the product. That's perfectly fine for 50 jars or 200 envelopes, but at 1000 pieces, the number of hand movements starts to add up.

From a roll, stickers come off one by one in sequence, the backing keeps feeding through, and the sticker corner peels off by itself over a sharp edge. However, the roll's advantage only shows up if the core size, gap between stickers and the output direction are set correctly – otherwise the roll won't even feed through the applicator.

When rolls are the only logical choice

  • You label products regularly and always with the same design (ingredients, barcode, expiry date).
  • You use a hand applicator, dispenser or semi-automatic labelling machine.
  • You're applying stickers to round surfaces – bottles, jars, cans – where a consistent starting point matters.

Materials: what peels off easily and what holds up best

We print both stickers in rolls and sheets on paper, PP film, vinyl, transparent and metallised film. Ease of application isn't only about shape:

  • Paper – the cheapest option for dry environments (boxes, packaging, price tags). Peels off easily, but deforms in moisture.
  • White PP film – the standard for food and cosmetic products: withstands moisture, wraps well around round surfaces.
  • Transparent PP – for a "no label look" effect on glass and plastic; it's important to avoid air bubbles when applying, so an applicator helps the most here.
  • Vinyl – durable for outdoor use, windows, vehicles; usually in sheets with contour cutting.
  • Metallised film – for a silver/gold effect; more often used in small quantities in sheets.

What to specify in your order so the roll works with an applicator

If the stickers are intended for a machine or dispenser, there are five things you need to know before production starts. Without them, a roll can be technically correct but unusable.

  1. Core diameter – most commonly 40 mm (1.5") or 76 mm (3").
  2. Maximum outer diameter – how large a roll fits into the machine (often 200–300 mm).
  3. Number of stickers per roll – for example, 500 or 1000 pcs per roll.
  4. Gap between stickers – standard 3 mm, so the sensor can read the gap.
  5. Output direction – whether the sticker comes out top-first, and whether the image is on the outside or inside of the roll.

If you don't have a machine, simply write "we'll apply by hand" – then we'll choose a 40 mm core and 500–1000 pcs per roll, which is comfortable to hold.

Price and turnaround

Approximate, excl. VAT: stickers in sheets with contour cutting start from around 1.00–1.50 EUR per A4 sheet at 50 sheets, while a round 40 mm sticker in a roll at 1000 pcs works out to around 0.05–0.09 EUR/pc. The exact price depends on quantity, material, shape and number of colours – at 5000 pcs the price per piece drops by a further 30–40%.

Production turnaround for our own printing (stickers, business cards, posters) is 1–3 business days. Urgent jobs can be arranged by agreement. We accept files in vector format (.ai, .eps, .pdf, .svg), CMYK, raster images at 300 dpi; we confirm the artwork by email before printing.

Frequently asked questions

Which is faster to apply by hand – a roll or a sheet?

A roll. By hand, from a roll you can usually apply 300–500 stickers per hour, from a sheet 150–250. If you add a simple hand dispenser, the speed increases to 600–900 pcs per hour.

How many stickers should go in one roll?

For manual work, 500–1000 pcs per roll with a 40 mm core is convenient. For machines, the quantity is determined by the maximum outer diameter – often 1000–3000 pcs can fit. If you're not sure, tell us the sticker size and machine model, and we'll do the calculation for you.

Can one order include multiple designs?

Yes. In sheets, this practically doesn't change the price, as several designs can be arranged on one sheet. In rolls, each design usually needs a separate roll, so setup costs increase; mixed rolls (designs in a fixed sequence) are possible only in a fixed order.

Can complex shapes be printed in rolls?

They can, but in practice, for rolls we recommend a rectangle with rounded corners, an oval or a circle. Complex contours with narrow cut-outs tend to tear in an applicator, so they're better suited to sheets with contour cutting.

How long do I have to wait for stickers?

The standard turnaround is 1–3 business days from artwork approval. Urgent jobs are handled by agreement, depending on material availability.

Can I order a test batch?

Yes. We often produce a small batch in sheets first, so you can check the material and adhesive on your surface, and only then run the full quantity in rolls.
