Photo on a mug: what kind of image works and how to prepare it

A practical guide: how many pixels you need for a photo on a mug, what the print area is, how to crop your image, and which mistakes make the result look blurry.

Photo on a mug: what kind of image works and how to prepare it

For a photo on a mug to avoid looking blurry, your image needs to be at least 1200×1000 pixels on one side, ideally at 300 dpi resolution — the print area on a standard 330 ml mug is up to roughly 200×80 mm, which at 300 dpi means about 2360×945 px. Sublimation printing is full-colour (CMYK), available from 1 piece, and a finished mug is usually ready within 1–3 business days. The single most important tip: send the original file from your phone's gallery or camera, not an image that has already passed through WhatsApp or social media.

What kind of image works for printing on a mug

Sublimation transfers an image onto the mug's coating with great precision — it shows every detail, but also every flaw. That's why choosing the right photo matters more than the printing technology itself.

Works well:

  • sharp photos from a phone or mirrorless/DSLR camera, taken in daylight or a well-lit room;
  • portraits where the face takes up at least a third of the frame;
  • images with a calm, simple background — this allows flexible cropping;
  • vector graphics (.ai, .eps, .pdf, .svg) for logos and text placed next to the photo.

Doesn't work well or gives poor results:

  • screenshots from Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp — these are usually 600–1000 px wide and heavily compressed;
  • very dark or backlit photos (in sublimation, dark areas become even darker);
  • images with heavy digital zoom and "grain";
  • photos of printed pictures re-photographed with a phone at an angle.

File requirements: sizes and formats

A mug doesn't need a professional studio photo, but it does need enough pixels. The table below shows how large an image can be on a mug while keeping 300 dpi quality.

We accept .jpg (high quality), .png, .tif and .pdf. For raster files: 300 dpi, colour space CMYK or sRGB — we handle the conversion. If an image is 150–200 dpi, the result is often still acceptable, but we'll flag this in the quote beforehand.

Safe zone and cropping

A mug is round, and the image "wraps around" next to the handle — so important details, text and faces should be placed at least 10 mm from the edges of the print area. We leave 8–10 mm of white margin at the top and bottom: sublimation on a standard mug doesn't reach all the way to the edge.

If you want an image that runs "edge to edge" all the way around the mug, you'll need a horizontal crop with a ratio of around 2.4:1. A vertical phone photo would need to be cropped quite heavily for this, so it's usually better to choose one or two separate images, one for each side.

How to prepare the artwork step by step

  1. Find the original file in your phone's gallery or in the cloud and check its size in pixels (Info / Properties).
  2. Send the file as a document or by email rather than as a regular chat image — this preserves full resolution.
  3. Tell us how to crop the image: square, circle, one side, or a band around the mug.
  4. If you want text (a name, date or message), specify the exact wording — we'll add the text for you.
  5. We prepare the artwork with the print area clearly marked and send it to you for approval by email.
  6. Once the artwork is approved, we print it; turnaround is 1–3 business days, with rush jobs available by arrangement.

Colours: what to expect from sublimation

Sublimation on ceramic gives a slightly warmer tone than a screen. Bright neon greens, oranges and vivid reds come out a bit more muted, while dark blue and black appear deeper. There's no white ink: wherever the artwork is white, the mug's base colour shows through.

Black-and-white and sepia photos look very safe on a mug — they don't depend on colour accuracy and hide slight noise well. If the gift is corporate and the logo colour is critical, provide Pantone or CMYK values, and we'll match them as closely as the technology allows. You can see real results in our portfolio.

Frequently asked questions

How large does the image need to be so a photo on a mug isn't blurry?

For one side of the mug, the minimum is around 1200×1000 px; for a full band around the mug, around 2400×1000 px. If the image is smaller, we'll let you know before printing and offer to scale it down or add a border.

Can I use a photo from my phone?

Yes, a modern phone photo (12 MP and up) is more than enough. It's important to send the original — compressed copies from WhatsApp and social media are 3–5 times smaller.

Will the print survive the dishwasher?

Sublimation printing on ceramic is resistant to hand washing and generally to machine washing too, but for guaranteed longevity we recommend hand washing and avoiding abrasive scrubbing on the print.

Can I order just one mug?

Yes, we work from 1 piece upward. With larger quantities, the price per piece drops — for example, from 50 pcs it's roughly a third lower.

How long does it take?

Our printing, including mugs, takes 1–3 business days after artwork approval. Rush orders are possible by arrangement.

Will you add text and fix up the photo?

We add text, crop the image and make basic adjustments (brightness, contrast, black-and-white version) at no extra charge. More complex retouching or background removal is quoted separately.

Send us your photo and idea at info@attaprint.lv, call +371 25776699 or message us on WhatsApp at the same number — we'll check the file quality and get in touch with a quote and artwork within one business day.
