Barcode Stickers: EAN Size, Quality and Scannability
A practical guide to preparing barcode stickers that scan reliably at the till: EAN-13 sizes, quiet zones, contrast, materials and indicative prices from EUR 17.60/m².

Barcode stickers scan reliably when the EAN-13 code is printed at a minimum of 80% magnification — that's 29.83 × 20.74 mm — while the standard (100%) size is 37.29 × 25.93 mm including quiet zones. The code must be printed black on a white or light background, 100% black (K), and the sticker area should be at least 4–5 mm larger than the code itself. For small print runs, barcode stickers cost from around EUR 0.02 per piece (paper stickers in sheets, EUR 17.60/m², excl. VAT).
EAN-13 size: how big does the code need to be
The EAN-13 standard size can be scaled from 80% to 200%. Below 80%, the module width drops under 0.264 mm, and cheaper till scanners start misreading, especially if the sticker sits on glossy or curved packaging.
| Magnification | Code size incl. quiet zones | Recommended sticker size | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80% | 29.83 × 20.74 mm | from 38 × 25 mm | small packaging, cosmetics |
| 90% | 33.56 × 23.34 mm | from 42 × 28 mm | universal option |
| 100% | 37.29 × 25.93 mm | from 45 × 30 mm | food, shop shelf |
| 150% | 55.94 × 38.90 mm | from 65 × 45 mm | boxes, multi-unit packaging |
| 200% | 74.58 × 51.86 mm | from 85 × 58 mm | pallets, logistics labels |
EAN-8 (the short code) at 100% is 26.73 × 21.64 mm — used only when the product is genuinely too small for an EAN-13 code.
Don't shorten the bar height
A common design shortcut is to "cut down" the bar height so the code fits the label. This reduces the angle at which a scanner can read the code, causing repeated scan attempts at the till. If space is tight, it's better to reduce the magnification to 80–85% while keeping proportions, or enlarge the sticker.
Quiet zones — the most common reason for scan failures
The quiet zone is the blank white area before and after the code. For EAN-13 it's 11 modules on the left and 7 modules on the right — roughly 3.6 mm and 2.3 mm at 100% size. If a frame, text, ingredient list or the sticker's edge intrudes into this area, the scanner simply "doesn't see" the code.
Practical rules we apply when checking customer artwork:
- at least 4 mm from the code's edge to the sticker's cut line, on each side;
- no borders, lines or background images within the quiet zones;
- keep the digits below the code — they allow manual entry if the scanner fails;
- don't delete the "<" and ">" marks if they're part of the original code.
Contrast, colours and material
Most till scanners use red light, which means red, orange and yellowish-brown bars are technically "invisible" to them. The only safe option is black (or very dark blue/green) on a white, cream or pale yellow background.
- Black using the K channel only. If the code is split across CMYK, even a small registration shift blurs the bar edges. We require 100% K, 0% C/M/Y.
- Transparent stickers only work for a barcode if there's a white base printed behind the code — otherwise contrast against dark packaging disappears.
- Metallic and mirror-film stickers are not suitable for barcodes — the reflection confuses the scanner. If a silver design is required, we place the code on a separate white field.
- Laminating: choose a matte laminate. Glossy laminate under shop lighting can create a glare right on the code.
- Material: paper is fine for dry products, but for freezers, fridges, cosmetics and chemicals we use PP film, which doesn't absorb moisture or turn into a grey mess.
Prices and quantities
Stickers are priced by area, so a small code is cheap even for a short run. Below are indicative prices excl. VAT, standard sheet printing (EUR 17.60/m²), allowing 3 mm spacing between stickers.
| Sticker size | Approx. pcs per 1 m² | Approx. EUR/pc | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 × 20 mm | ~1200 | from 0.015 | EAN-13 80%, no extra text |
| 40 × 30 mm | ~700 | from 0.025 | most popular price/code size |
| 58 × 40 mm | ~350 | from 0.05 | code + name + price |
| 100 × 50 mm | ~170 | from 0.10 | code + ingredients or translation |
For small runs we calculate by sheet: an A3 sheet is 0.125 m², so from around EUR 2.20, fitting about 90 stickers at 40 × 30 mm. Laminated stickers cost EUR 24.00/m², stickers with contour cutting and transfer film EUR 24.00/m², transparent ones EUR 48.00/m². The exact price depends on quantity, material and cutting method. Files and artwork preparation
Always send the barcode as vector graphics (.ai, .eps, .pdf, .svg), generated with a barcode generator — not as a screenshot or a JPG from an email. A rasterised code, even at 300 dpi, produces uneven bar edges, which directly reduces scan quality.
- Don't scale the code disproportionately (width only or height only).
- Avoid effects: shadows, transparency, gradients or outlines on the bars.
- Make sure the font for the number is embedded or converted to outlines.
- Add a 2 mm bleed and mark the cut line.
If you don't have artwork yet, send us the EAN numbers in an Excel file along with the sticker size — we'll lay it out for you. We often prepare product, ingredient and translation labels together with the code on a single sticker this way.
Placement and pre-run checks
Apply the sticker to a flat surface, at least 8 mm from a packaging seam, fold or edge. On round packaging — bottles, jars, mugs — the bars should be oriented vertically (in the "ladder" direction) so the curve doesn't compress the code's width.
We always print a sample sheet before a large print run. It's a good idea to take it to a shop till or scan it with a handheld scanner — a phone app is less demanding than a real till scanner and may "miss" a problem. Samples are ready within 1 business day, and the full sticker run usually takes 1–3 business days. You can view examples in our portfolio.
Frequently asked questions
What's the smallest EAN-13 sticker size?
The code at 80% magnification takes up 29.83 × 20.74 mm including quiet zones, so the practical sticker minimum is around 38 × 25 mm. Less space means the quiet zones get cropped and the till can't read the code.
Can a barcode be printed in colour?
Not the bars. Till scanners can't distinguish red, orange and yellow tones from the background. The safest option is 100% black on a white background; the background can also be cream or pale yellow.
Can a barcode be printed on a transparent sticker?
Yes, but a white base needs to be printed under the code. On dark packaging without a white base, the contrast is insufficient and the code won't scan.
How much do 500 barcode stickers at 40 × 30 mm cost?
That's approximately 0.72 m², so around EUR 13 excl. VAT for standard paper stickers in sheets. With lamination or on PP film the price is higher; we confirm the exact amount in a quote.
Can you put both the code and ingredients in Latvian on one sticker?
Yes, we do this often. In that case we plan a larger sticker (e.g. 100 × 50 mm or 100 × 70 mm) so the text has at least a 6–7 pt font and doesn't encroach on the code's quiet zones.
How long does an order take?
Sticker printing usually takes 1–3 business days after artwork approval. Urgent jobs can be arranged by agreement.
