Digital vs Offset Printing: When to Choose Which
Comparison: digital printing pays off up to about 500–1000 copies, offset from 1000 pcs. Print runs, prices, turnaround times and material limits.

Choosing between digital and offset printing really comes down to a calculation: as two separate technologies, digital and offset printing differ in that digital printing has no setup costs, so it's more cost-effective up to roughly 500–1000 copies, while with offset each additional sheet gets cheaper, so from 1000–1500 pcs it usually wins on price. We produce digital jobs in 3–5 business days, while an offset run needs 5–10 business days, since it also involves making printing plates and ink drying time. If your print run is under 250 pcs or you need variable data, offset isn't even worth considering.\n\n## How each technology works\n\nDigital printing transfers toner or liquid ink directly onto paper with no intermediate steps. There are no printing plates and no machine set-up requiring dozens of test sheets, so the cost per copy stays almost constant — the same whether you print 50 or 300 pcs.\n\nOffset printing first transfers the image from an aluminium plate onto a rubber cylinder and only then onto paper. Each colour needs its own plate, so the initial cost is 60–150 EUR per job regardless of the run size. However, once the machine is set up, it prints at a speed of 8,000–15,000 sheets per hour, and material cost becomes the main part of the price.\n\n## The break-even point: where prices cross\n\nBelow are indicative Latvian market figures for business cards on 350 gsm paper, 4+4 colours, excl. VAT. The exact price depends on quantity, paper and finishing (lamination, rounded corners, foiling).\n\n| Quantity | Digital printing | Offset printing | Better value |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| 100 pcs | from 25 EUR | not cost-effective | digital |\n| 500 pcs | from 55 EUR | ~75 EUR | digital |\n| 1,000 pcs | from 90 EUR | ~85 EUR | comparable |\n| 5,000 pcs | ~330 EUR | ~210 EUR | offset |\n| 20,000 pcs | ~1,200 EUR | ~560 EUR | offset |\n\nFor flyers and brochures, the threshold is similar: 1,000 A5 flyers on 130 gsm paper cost around 90–110 EUR digitally and 70–90 EUR offset, but at 300 pcs offset would already be twice as expensive. For catalogues with 16–32 pages, offset starts to pay off from around 800–1,000 copies.\n\nIn practice, most of our clients' orders — sports club membership cards, café menus, school invitations, municipal newsletters — fall within the 100–1,000 pcs range, and digital printing is the logical choice there. You can view specific formats and paper options on the business cards and flyers page.\n\n## When digital printing is the only option\n\n- Small runs and single pieces. We also work with a single copy — a sample, a prototype, one gift card.\n- Variable data. Personalised names on invitations, numbered tickets, QR codes linking to different pages, every sheet different — this isn't possible with offset.\n- Urgent jobs. A digital job can be produced in a shorter timeframe — usually 2–5 business days, provided the file is prepared correctly.\n- Frequently updated content. A menu, price list, or promotional flyer that changes monthly. It's not worth printing 5,000 copies that will go out of date.\n- Test run. Before placing a large offset order, we recommend 50–100 pcs digitally to check the artwork in person.\n\n## When to choose offset\n\nOffset makes sense when the run exceeds 1,000–1,500 copies and the design doesn't change: a company catalogue, annual report, marketing campaign brochure, or large-volume packaging carton printing.\n\nA second argument is colour accuracy and spot colours. If a brand colour needs to match a Pantone reference exactly — say, a bright orange or a dark blue with a green tint — CMYK digital printing may reproduce it with a 3–8% deviation. With offset, a dedicated spot colour can be mixed to achieve an exact match. Third, offset handles thick card stock over 400 gsm, textured and recycled papers better, which digital machines sometimes pick up toner "unevenly" on.\n\n### Quality differences visible to the eye\n\nModern digital printing achieves 1200–2400 dpi, and it reproduces text from 6 pt just as well as offset. The difference shows up in large solid colour areas — digital printing may show slight unevenness or toner sheen there, while offset gives a smoother surface. That's why offset delivers a visually calmer result for posters with a dark background or brand books with large colour fields.\n\n## A third option: large-format and special printing\n\nFor posters A3–A0, PVC banners, roll-up systems and photo banners, neither digital nor classic offset printing is suitable — that's where large-format inkjet printing on roll media comes in. Likewise, stickers with contour cutting are produced using digital printing on adhesive film, since the runs are usually 50–2,000 pcs. You can view these services under banners and roll-ups and stickers.\n\n## File preparation for both technologies\n\nThe requirements are almost identical: vector graphics (.ai, .eps, .pdf), CMYK colour space, images at a minimum of 300 dpi, a 3 mm bleed on each side, and text converted to outlines or fonts embedded. For offset, spot colours additionally need to be specified as separate Spot channels rather than a CMYK mix.\n\nThe most common mistake we see: an RGB file that looks vibrant on screen but prints duller. If colour accuracy is critical, let us know when you place your order — we'll prepare a proof for approval before printing the full run.\n\n| Parameter | Digital printing | Offset |\n|---|---|---|\n| Cost-effective run | 1–1,000 pcs | from 1,000 pcs |\n| Setup costs | none | 60–150 EUR |\n| Turnaround | 3–5 business days | 5–10 business days |\n| Variable data | yes | no |\n| Pantone spot colours | CMYK approximation | exact |\n| Paper thickness | up to ~400 gsm | up to ~500 gsm and more |\n\n## Frequently asked questions\n\nWhat quantity is the threshold at which offset becomes cheaper?\n\nFor standard 4+4 colour jobs, the threshold is roughly 1,000–1,500 copies. If the job is single-colour or the paper is expensive, the threshold shifts to 2,000–3,000 pcs. When you place an order, we calculate both options and show you which one works out cheaper in your specific case.\n\nWill the colours in digital printing be the same as in offset?\n\nFor most jobs, you won't notice a difference. Deviation shows up in corporate spot colours and large solid colour areas — there, digital printing may differ by a few percent. If you already have material previously printed offset, send it to us as a sample and we'll take it into account when matching colours as closely as possible.\n\nHow quickly can I receive my order?\n\nDigital printing jobs usually take 3–5 business days, offset runs 5–10 business days, and large-format posters and banners 2–5 business days. Urgent jobs can be arranged by separate agreement, provided the material is in stock and the file is print-ready.\n\nCan I order 50 business cards?\n\nYes. In digital printing we also work with a single piece — there's no minimum run. 50 business cards cost roughly from 20 EUR excl. VAT, depending on paper and finishing.\n\nHow do I find out which technology suits my job?\n\nSend us the file or a description with the format, quantity, paper and desired turnaround. We'll check the file, recommend a technology, and provide prices for both options if the quantity falls in the border zone. You can view the full range of services on the digital printing page.\n\nEmail info@attaprint.lv, call +371 25776699, or send your file via WhatsApp to the same number — project manager Madara will respond and prepare a quote within one business day.
