Photo Printing on Mugs, Puzzles and Calendars: How It Works

Photo printing on mugs is done using sublimation at 180–200°C; turnaround is 3–5 business days, from EUR 7 per piece. We also explain puzzles and calendars.

A mug, puzzle and calendar together with photo printing

Photo printing on mugs uses sublimation technology: the image is first printed on special paper with sublimation ink, then heat-pressed at 180–200°C for 60–180 seconds, during which the ink turns into gas and soaks into the mug's polymer coating. The result is a full-colour image with no texture that withstands dishwashers. A single photo mug costs from around EUR 7 excl. VAT, production usually takes 5–10 business days after artwork approval, and we also work with single-piece orders.

Why sublimation is the right choice

A photograph is a continuous-tone image — it contains hundreds of shades, shadows, skin tones, background bokeh. Screen printing or other spot-colour methods can't handle this, as they work with separate, clearly defined colours. Sublimation prints full-colour CMYK, so a photo on a mug looks just like it does on paper, with only a slight loss of tone (roughly 10–15% reduction in saturation, especially for bright blues and neon shades).

An important limitation: sublimation only works on a light-coloured base — white or light cream — with a polymer coating. Full-colour photos can't be printed on a black mug — for that, so-called magic mugs are used, where the image appears when a hot drink is poured in, or engraving and single-colour printing are applied instead.

Mugs: types and what to expect

From our catalogue, classic 330 ml ceramic mugs with a white coating are best suited for photo printing — they allow printing either the full circumference (approximately 200 × 90 mm) or just one side, leaving the handle area clear. We also offer:

  • white ceramic mugs, 330 ml — full-colour photo, including 360-degree printing;
  • magic colour-changing mugs — the image appears from 60°C;
  • mugs with a coloured handle and interior — photo on the white outer surface;
  • thermal mugs with a stainless steel body — photo printing isn't possible on these; UV printing or engraving is used instead;
  • thermal bottles and flasks — logo or single-colour graphics rather than photographs.

You can browse our mug range in the mugs section, and thermal flasks and bottles in the thermal flasks and bottles section.

How to care for a printed mug

The sublimated image sits inside the coating rather than on its surface, so it won't peel off. However, abrasive cleaning agents and metal scourers will dull the coating over time. The mug is dishwasher-safe and also microwave-safe — unless it has a coloured handle with metal elements.

Photo puzzles

Photo puzzles are made in two ways. The first is sublimation onto a ready-made white puzzle board with a polymer coating; the second is digital printing on thick paper with lamination, followed by cutting. For small quantities (1–20 pcs), sublimation is more practical; for larger runs, printing and cutting works better.

The most common sizes are A5 with 80–120 pieces, A4 with 120–250 pieces, and A3 with 250–500 pieces. The more pieces, the higher the demands on image quality: a blurry phone photo on a 500-piece A3 puzzle will look poor, since each piece is only 2–3 cm wide.

Photo calendars

We produce calendars using digital printing — a different technology that makes it economical to produce runs of both 5 and 500 copies. The most popular options are:

  • wall calendar A3 or A4, 13 pages (cover + 12 months), 170–250 gsm coated paper, wire-o binding or cardboard base;
  • desk calendar 210 × 100 mm on a triangular stand, 300 gsm card;
  • poster calendar A2–A1 with one large photo and a year grid at the bottom;
  • pocket calendar 90 × 55 mm, laminated on both sides.

For calendars, we recommend matte lamination — a glossy surface reflects light and fingerprints. You can browse digital printing products in the printing section.

File requirements for photographs

Requirements for photo products differ from logo printing, where we expect vector graphics (.ai, .eps, .pdf).

  • Resolution: 300 dpi at actual size. For a mug with a print area of 200 × 90 mm, this means at least 2360 × 1060 pixels.
  • Format: .tiff, .jpg with minimal compression, or .pdf. Screenshots and images from social media are usually 72 dpi and won't work.
  • Colour space: you can submit files in RGB; we convert to CMYK using a print-appropriate colour profile — this gives more predictable results than automatic conversion.
  • Bleed allowance: 3 mm on each side; important elements should be no closer than 5 mm from the edge.
  • For portraits, we recommend one good image rather than a collage; six small photos around a mug's circumference will each be only 6 cm wide.

If you're unsure about image quality, send us the file — we'll check it and let you know the maximum realistic size. Before printing, we always send a digital artwork visual for approval.

What these gifts are good for

Photo mugs are most often ordered for team anniversaries, farewell gifts and sports clubs — for example, a team photo on 20 mugs at the end of a season. Calendars are ordered by companies and municipalities featuring their sites or local landscapes; schools order them with class photos. Puzzles work well as gifts for children and as unusual event invitations. If your gift set also needs a bag, notebook or pen with a logo, check out our promotional products section.

Frequently asked questions

Will a photo-printed mug survive the dishwasher?

Yes. The sublimated image sits inside the polymer coating, so it won't be damaged by a dishwasher or microwave. Just avoid abrasive powders and metal scourers.

How large does the photo need to be to print on a mug?

At least 2360 × 1060 pixels for the full circumference area, i.e. 300 dpi at actual size. A modern smartphone photo is usually sufficient, as long as it hasn't been cropped or pulled from social media.

Can a photo be printed on a black mug?

Not a full-colour photo — sublimation ink is translucent and a dark background overpowers it. For dark mugs, engraving, UV printing or single-colour printing is used, or you can choose a magic colour-changing mug instead.

How long does it take to get a single photo mug?

The standard turnaround is 5–10 business days from artwork approval. We can complete urgent orders faster by prior arrangement if the mug is in stock.

Can a calendar use different photos for each month?

Yes, with digital printing each page can be different with no extra plate charges. You'll need 13 photos (cover plus 12 months) at the appropriate resolution.

What is the minimum order quantity?

For mugs and puzzles — one piece. For calendars, technically also one, though the per-unit price starts dropping significantly from 10–25 copies.

Send us your photos and desired product at info@attaprint.lv, call or message us on WhatsApp at +371 25776699 — project manager Madara will prepare a quote within one business day. You can also drop off your files in person at Kandavas iela 29A, Riga.
