Laser Engraving a Logo on Metal and Wood: A Lasting Result
How laser engraving on metal and wood works, what contrast to expect, approximate prices and lead times of 3–10 business days.

Laser engraving a logo is a printing method where the laser beam removes or alters the surface layer of the material, so the image isn't coloured on but physically engraved into it — on metal it's usually a light grey or white tone, on wood a dark brown to black. A logo like this won't wash off in a dishwasher, won't peel, and won't fade in the sun, unlike coloured printing. Standard turnaround is 5–10 business days after artwork approval, depending on quantity and product, with rush jobs available by arrangement.
How laser engraving differs from colour printing
Screen printing, pad printing and UV printing apply a layer of ink on top of the material. A laser works the opposite way: it uses heat to vaporise or burn the surface, resulting in a textured engraving or a colour change within the material itself. This has two practical consequences.
First, durability. The engraving lasts as long as the product itself — this is the main reason engraving is chosen over printing for thermal mugs, bottles and multi-tools.
Second, you can't choose the colour. The engraving tone depends solely on the material: stainless steel turns light, anodised aluminium turns white, powder-coated metal reveals the base metal's colour, and wood turns brown. If your logo absolutely must be in your corporate colour, another technology such as pad printing or UV printing is a better fit.
Metal: what to expect from the result
On metal, the laser works with precision and can engrave text as small as 4–5 pt on a flat surface. The most common materials in promotional products:
- Stainless steel (flasks, thermal mugs, bottles) — a light grey, matte engraving with good contrast on dark surfaces.
- Anodised aluminium (pens, keyrings, charger housings) — a light white engraving, the highest contrast on black or dark blue housings.
- Powder-coated or lacquered metal — the laser removes the coating layer and reveals the metal underneath, giving a glossier, higher-contrast result.
- Brass and copper — a darker, warmer tone; used more often for commemorative plaques than mass-produced items.
Round surfaces, such as bottles and flasks, use rotary engraving, which allows the logo to follow the curve. The practical engraving area on a 500 ml bottle is usually around 40 × 60 mm, and on a thermal mug around 30 × 50 mm. You can browse a wider range of bottles and flasks in the water bottles and thermal flasks categories.
Wood and other natural materials
Wood reacts to the laser with a burn mark, so the engraving is always darker than the base material. Light species — birch, maple, plywood — give a crisp, almost black outline. Darker species, such as oak or bamboo, give less contrast since the surface itself is already brown.
The density of the wood's growth rings affects the tone: on bamboo the engraving is very even, while on solid wood there can be slight variations between lighter and darker layers. This isn't a defect but a property of the material, and it's worth explaining to the customer before ordering. Besides wood and metal, the laser also works well on cork, leather and faux leather — most often for notebook covers and coasters.
Material comparison
| Material | Engraving tone | Detail level | Typical products |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Light grey, matte | Very high | Flasks, thermal mugs, bottles |
| Anodised aluminium | White | Very high | Pens, keyrings, tech gifts |
| Lacquered metal | Glossy metal | High | Bottles, keyrings |
| Birch, plywood | Dark brown to black | High | Plaques, commemorative awards, coasters |
| Bamboo | Evenly brown | Medium-high | Notebook covers, pens, gift sets |
| Cork, leather | Dark brown | Medium | Notebooks, coasters, cases |
Approximate prices and quantities
Prices depend on the engraving area, product shape and quantity. Below are approximate Latvian market figures for the engraving work excl. VAT; the product cost is added separately.
| Quantity | Engraving per piece (approx.) | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| 1–9 pcs | from EUR 4.50 | EUR 15–25 |
| 10–49 pcs | from EUR 2.50 | EUR 15 |
| 50–199 pcs | from EUR 1.50 | included |
| 200+ pcs | from EUR 1.20 | included |
We also work with single pieces — for example, an engraved flask as an individual gift or a single commemorative plaque. For larger quantities, the price per piece drops noticeably, as the setup time is spread across the whole batch. We always calculate the exact price based on the specific product and logo size; you can see the full range of promotional products with printing options in the promotional products with logo category.
File requirements and how to prepare your logo
Laser engraving requires vector graphics: .ai, .eps or .pdf with outlined text converted to curves. Engraving is single-colour, so a colour logo is converted into a single-tone version.
- Minimum text height on metal — around 1.5 mm, on wood — 2 mm.
- Minimum line thickness — 0.25 mm; thinner lines may disappear or merge together.
- Gradients, shadows and transparency can't be reproduced — they need to be replaced with clean outlines.
- If your logo is only available as a JPG or PNG, we'll redraw it in vector format; for a simple logo this usually costs EUR 20–40 and takes one business day.
Before a large batch, we prepare a digital layout showing the engraving position and size, but if the product shape is unusual, we recommend one test piece — it's cheaper than having to re-engrave 300 units.
When to choose engraving, when to choose printing
Engraving is the logical choice if the product will be washed, used daily, or is a more prestigious gift: flasks, bottles, metal pens, wooden awards, plaques. Colour printing is better if the logo is multi-coloured, if a large print area is needed, or if the product is made of textile or plastic. You can see metal and wood pen options in the pens category.
In practice, we often combine techniques: for example, an event set with an engraved flask, a tote bag with screen printing, and a notebook with a printed sticker. The result is cohesive, while each product uses the technology best suited to it.
Frequently asked questions
Can the engraving be washed off or erased?
No. The engraving is physically etched into the material, so it withstands dishwashing, friction and UV exposure. The only way to remove it would be to mechanically sand down the surface.
Can the logo be engraved in our corporate colour?
No, the engraving tone depends on the material, not a colour choice. If colour is essential, we use pad printing, UV printing or screen printing instead — we recommend comparing both options before ordering.
How long does an order take?
Standard turnaround is 5–10 business days after artwork approval, depending on product availability and quantity. For small orders from in-stock products, the turnaround can be shorter; rush deadlines by arrangement.
What's the minimum order?
We also work with single pieces. For one or two pieces, the invoice includes a setup fee of EUR 15–25 plus engraving, so from around 10–20 pieces the price per unit becomes significantly more favourable.
Can you engrave items we've already purchased?
Yes, as long as the material is suitable and the surface allows engraving. Please send us one sample for testing, as some coating films and powder paints can react unpredictably.
Send us the product name or your idea along with your logo file at info@attaprint.lv, or call or message us on WhatsApp at +371 25776699 — we'll prepare a quote with price and turnaround within one business day. Address for viewing and collecting samples: Kandavas iela 29A, Riga, contacts.
