Matte vs Gloss Vinyl: How to Choose for Stickers

A practical comparison of when matte and when gloss vinyl works better for stickers — by surface, lighting, durability and price.

Matte and gloss stickers placed side by side showing the difference in glare

The choice between matte and gloss vinyl depends on where the sticker will be applied: gloss vinyl gives roughly 15–20% more saturated colours and is the right choice for product labels, packaging and logo stickers, while matte doesn't create glare and reads better on shop windows, information signs and anywhere the surface is touched or photographed. We produce both films using the same technology, at the same price and with the same turnaround — usually 3–5 business days.

What's the technical difference

In both cases the base material is self-adhesive PVC or polypropylene film with acrylic adhesive. Only the surface finish differs: gloss film has a smooth, mirror-like surface, while matte has a microscopically rough texture that scatters light.

This affects three things:

  • Colour depth. A glossy surface reflects light in one direction, so black looks blacker and saturated colours appear brighter.
  • Glare. A matte surface is readable from any angle, even under strong shop or office lighting.
  • Fingerprints. They're visible on gloss film but practically invisible on matte.

Important to know: lamination (a protective film over the print) is a separate step, and it also comes in matte or gloss. For stickers that will be outdoors, washed or rubbed, we recommend laminating — without lamination UV resistance is about 1–2 years, with lamination 3–5 years.

When to choose gloss vinyl

Gloss film works when the sticker itself is part of the product's visual identity:

  • product labels on jars, bottles, boxes (coffee, honey, cosmetics, beer);
  • packaging seal stickers and brand logos on boxes;
  • stickers for cars, bicycles, sports equipment;
  • stickers with photos or gradients that need maximum contrast;
  • gift and merch stickers that customers stick on laptops and bottles.

Gloss film is also slightly easier to clean — dust and stains wipe off a smooth surface with a damp cloth.

When to choose matte vinyl

Matte film is the practical choice when a sticker needs to be readable and unobtrusive:

  • information signs, workplace safety and directional stickers;
  • stickers on glass doors, display cases and shop windows where sunlight or spotlights hit;
  • stickers on office walls and furniture;
  • restaurant and café signage and QR-code stickers on tables (a matte surface scans better with a phone camera, since it doesn't create glare);
  • stickers intended to be photographed or filmed.

A matte surface visually looks calmer and more contemporary — it's often chosen by brands with minimalist design and light, pastel colours, where gloss wouldn't add anything.

Prices and quantities

Sticker price doesn't depend on whether the film is matte or gloss — it's determined by size, total area, contour-cutting complexity and quantity. Indicative prices excl. VAT:

Sticker50 pcs250 pcs1000 pcs
Round 50 mmfrom EUR 0.45/pcfrom EUR 0.18/pcfrom EUR 0.09/pc
Rectangle 90×50 mmfrom EUR 0.55/pcfrom EUR 0.22/pcfrom EUR 0.11/pc
Contour-cut, up to 100 mmfrom EUR 0.75/pcfrom EUR 0.30/pcfrom EUR 0.15/pc

These figures are indicative — we calculate the exact price based on your file and quantity. We also work with single pieces, but for small runs setup work makes up most of the cost, so from 250 pieces the price per sticker drops several times over. How to prepare your file

For the result to match what you intended, the file should be vector-based — .ai, .eps or .pdf, in CMYK colour space. If the sticker needs contour cutting, add the cut line as a separate vector layer.

Practical tips:

  • Bleed to the edge. Add at least a 2 mm bleed, and keep text and logo at least 3 mm from the cut line.
  • Black background. On gloss film, use rich black (e.g. C40 M30 Y30 K100) — plain K100 will look grey.
  • Fine text. Below 6 pt, matte film is the safer choice, since there's no glare.
  • Corporate colours. If your brand has a Pantone colour, let us know — CMYK printing has variations, and we can produce a test sample before the full run.

If you don't have a file, or it's only a JPG, our designer can redraw it — preparation costs from around EUR 20 excl. VAT, depending on the scope of work.

Frequently asked questions

Do matte and gloss vinyl cost the same?

Yes, in our price list both surfaces are in the same price group. Price is affected by sticker size, quantity, shape and whether lamination is needed — the surface finish itself doesn't change the price.

Which film holds up better on a car's surface?

The adhesive properties are the same; only the surface differs. For car stickers, lamination matters more: a laminated sticker withstands high-pressure car washes and keeps its colours for 3–5 years, while an unlaminated one starts fading after 1–2 years.

Can you write on a sticker by hand?

On matte film — yes, with a permanent marker or ballpoint pen. On a glossy surface the ink smears. If you plan to write dates or numbers on a sticker, choose a matte finish.

How long does it take to produce stickers?

The standard turnaround is 2–5 business days from file approval; for large runs or complex contour cutting — up to 5 business days. Urgent jobs can be done faster by arrangement.

Can I order a sample before a large production run?

Yes. We produce a test sample with both surfaces so you can compare them in person on your actual product. It's usually ready within 2–3 business days.

Is a sticker or a banner better for a shop window?

Glass is usually fitted with matte vinyl or perforated film, while outdoor signage uses PVC banners. We assess solutions individually — see also our banners section.
