Engraving vs Pad Printing on a Metal Bottle: Pros and Cons

Engraving or pad printing on a metal bottle — which withstands washing, which reproduces logo colours, and what each option costs. A comparison with indicative prices.

Engraving vs pad printing on a metal bottle: pros and cons

Choosing between engraving or pad printing on a metal bottle is a choice between durability and colour: laser engraving becomes part of the surface and withstands years of washing, but the logo comes out in a single tone — usually silvery grey or light metal colour. Pad printing reproduces brand colours according to Pantone and allows printing in 1–4 colours, but it is a surface coating that can wear off with heavy use of a dishwasher. In practice, for 8 out of 10 company orders on stainless steel and aluminium bottles we recommend engraving, and pad printing when the logo isn't recognisable without its exact colour.

How each technology works

Laser engraving

A laser beam removes the bottle's colour coating or mattes the metal surface. The result isn't colour but relief and tone: on a coloured bottle, the base metal tone appears (light grey, silvery), while on untreated steel, a matte design appears. Engraving doesn't peel, doesn't fade, and isn't damaged by either a dishwasher or hot water.

Rotary engraving allows working around the bottle's round shape, so on cylindrical bottles it's possible to use a wider band rather than just one flat area.

Pad printing

A silicone pad transfers ink from a printing plate onto the item. Each colour requires a separate plate and a separate printing pass, so 3 colours mean 3 set-up fees. Colours can be mixed according to Pantone, and a white logo on a dark bottle looks exactly as it does in the artwork. After printing, the ink is cured, and with quality bottles the durability is good, though not permanent.

When to choose engraving

  • The bottle is for everyday use — for a sports club, office, employees who wash it daily.
  • The logo is single-colour or easily adapted to one tone.
  • You need a small batch: engraving doesn't require printing plates, so even 20–30 bottles make economic sense.
  • You want a unified, premium look for a gift set where the bottle goes together with a thermal mug and a metal pen.

When to choose pad printing

  • Brand identity relies on colour (red, blue, corporate green), and a grey engraved logo would become unrecognisable.
  • The logo has two or more colours that would merge together in engraving.
  • The bottle is dark or matte, and you need contrast — white pad printing on a black bottle is the strongest option.
  • Quantity of 100 pcs and more, where plate costs are spread over more pieces.

Combined option

Sometimes the best solution is both: engraving with the company name on the body and a small pad-printed slogan or website address below. We calculate this option's cost separately, as it involves two printing passes.

Examples from our catalogue

The same printing principles apply to all metal products — pens, thermal mugs and bottles. Metal pens are a good way to see how engraving looks on aluminium:

Files and timelines

Both technologies require vector graphics: .ai, .eps, .pdf or .svg. For engraving, we convert the logo to a single tone and check that the thinnest lines aren't below 0.3 mm. For pad printing, we need Pantone colours specified; CMYK or an image from a presentation won't work.

Promotional products with printing are usually ready in 6–10 business days: production takes 4–7 business days depending on quantity, plus delivery of 2–3 days. Before production, we send an artwork proof with the printing location and size, and on request also a 3D view with your logo; production starts only after approval by e-mail. Urgent jobs are handled by arrangement.

FAQ

Does engraving on a metal bottle withstand a dishwasher?

Yes. Engraving is incorporated into the surface, so it doesn't peel or fade even after many washes. Pad printing is a layer of ink on the surface, and with regular dishwasher use it may wear off over time, so bottles with pad printing are better washed by hand.

Can engraving reproduce my brand colours?

No. Engraving gives a single tone — the colour of the base metal or the underlying layer of the coating, usually light grey or silvery. If your logo isn't recognisable without its exact colour, choose pad printing, where colours are mixed according to Pantone.

How many colours can be pad-printed on a bottle?

Usually 1–4 colours. Each colour requires a separate printing plate and a separate printing pass, so the set-up fee is indicatively from EUR 15 per colour, and the price per piece rises with each colour. Pad printing reproduces gradients and photographs only to a limited extent.

What is the minimum quantity for metal bottles with a logo?

For engraving, usually from 10–25 pcs, as no printing plates are needed. For pad printing, it makes economic sense from 50 pcs, but the clear savings threshold starts at 100 pcs, when plate costs are spread over a larger quantity.

How big can the logo on a bottle be?

On standard sports bottles and thermal mugs, the printing area is usually 40×20 to 60×40 mm, depending on the model and surface curvature. We specify the exact area in the quote and artwork for each item.

How long does an order take?

Promotional products with printing are usually ready in 6–10 business days: production takes 4–7 business days depending on quantity, plus delivery of 2–3 days. Urgent jobs are handled by arrangement, so let us know your required date straight away.
